Not only did the pastor did a fucking long ass sermon which included stories of Jesus hanging on the cross (right, cuz he was there to see it), he denigrated my culture.
An old friend of the family's recently passed away after surgery. Word is, he killed himself by pulling his own plug. And none of us were allowed to see him before he died. Why?
Because the family who are devout Christians didn't want us interfering with their last attempts to convert their father. I can only imagine them praying around his bed, acting like a bunch of retarded (yes, I said retarded) goons who need some blind faith to give their lives meaning.
Meanwhile, the poor guy is dying without seeing any of his friends and his mistress is at home (the woman he has been shacked up with for over 30 years).
The funeral was even worse. How do you people handle the religious stuff at these things? I was soooo offended by the fact that all they talked about was god. And all they could muster up was a whole whack of stories about god. And god forgave us. And god is perfect.
What about our friend Jack? What about remembering him? I am so pissed right now.
The only redeeming part of that disaster was the old Chinese guy who made a long speech about how chaotic the world is and how gentle Jack was. It was the best speech I have ever heard. And I secretly felt good that none of those Christian freaks couldn't understand a word of it because it was in poetic Cantonese.
Honour thy father. What a load of shit.
Other things that were fucked up: - family members who went up to say a few words about Jack always lead the speech back to Jesus - the pastor fucking said: "in Chinese culture, you are taught to respect each other.. And respect our elders.. And put family first. That is something embedded into your culture. But.. THAT is not enough.. It is not enough without the belief." He was implying that we should put God first before anything.
I almost walked out, I was so furious. How DARE he mock our traditions and insult the many old skool Chinese people there.
Is it wrong for me to be offended that a Chinese family would give up their cultural traditions? And believe in such foreign concepts? I mean, Jesus? The cross? Wtf, you're fucking yellow! Have some respect for your own culture!
